Da Hong Pao
Da Hong Pao is one of China’s most famous teas, and a personal favorite of our oolong expert, Wenxing. It is a premier example of Yan Cha (rock oolong), a name derived from the mineral rich, rocky soil of the Wuyi Mountains where it is grown. The tea bushes absorb these minerals, imparting a unique and distinct mineral character known as "Yan Yun" (rock rhyme) to the finished tea.
All Da Hong Pao plants can trace their lineage back to the original four mother bushes in Wuyi. While the tea from those original plants is no longer harvested, they have been propagated over centuries to create new generations of tea bushes, allowing this treasured tea to be shared and enjoyed.
Our specific batch of Da Hong Pao is crafted to be heavily oxidized but features a lighter roast, a style that allows the natural mineral and earthy notes to come through in every sip. This is a great tea to enjoy at any time, but it truly shines after a heavy meal, where it serves as a perfect, digestif to cap off a great dinner.
